Real or fake?

This is the warm-up step of module M4 (media literacy and disinformation). The aim is to take a bodily position on whether a claim looks “real” or “fake”, without yet announcing the correct answer. The Dutch definition in the Pallas e-book — using media in a conscious, critical and active way — is opened afterwards with the checklist.

Materials

Six image cards (a headline, a screenshot or a poster)
Two ends on the floor or the board: real / fake

Steps

Participants stand on a line: one end is “real”, the other “fake”. Anyone who cannot stand marks the same ends from a seat.

The trainer shows a card. Each person chooses a position in about twenty seconds; reasons are not asked at this step.

After six cards the warm-up closes. Answers are opened in the following news-check task, using the classroom-tools list.

Inclusion

Do not rely on the written headline alone; colour and shape should also help. Anyone who cannot stand takes part from a seat. No score is given.

At the end of the session

Participation is noted by movement and hand signals. The correct answer is not announced at this step.

Home task

The warm-up has no separate home task. The home task is given in the news-check activity of the same session.
